Decks cleared for world-class museum in state capital
Decks have been cleared for the setting up of an international class museum “on the evolution of the History and Civilization of the Indian Sub-Continent” at a prime location in the city.
The state cabinet on Tuesday gave the go ahead signal for initiating the process to begin work on the basis of its master plan with an estimated cost of Rs 200 crore. Toronto-based firm Lord Cultural Resources has been awarded as master consultant of the project. Last month, the company president Barry Lord and his associate Batul Raaj Mehta from Mumbai had made a powerpoint presentation before CM Nitish Kumar about the entire concept of the museum. The master consultant would soon sign a contract which would be valid till the opening of the museum. The consultancy fee of the firm would be nearly Rs 4.3 crore, an official said.
The new museum will mainly allow Biharis to appreciate and understand the grandeur of their past and work towards a grand future. The approximate time frame for completing the project would be four years.
After its completion, the new Patna museum will join the ranks of Grand Egyptian Museum ( Egypt), Luvre Lens (France), Guggenheim in Bilbao (Spain) and Canadian Museum of Human Rights in Winnipeg ( Canada). The new museum in Patna will spread over 27 acres of prime land at Bailey road. At present, several spacious government bungalows, an university and a church are located in the area. These would be demolished to pave the way for construction of new museum within the stipulated time frame, an official said.
A separate inter-departmental monitoring coordination committee would soon comprising departments such as finance, urban development, building construction, tourism and art and culture for smooth completion of the project. The department of art and culture would be the nodal department of the project, sources said.
The Bihar government would soon appoint a nodal official to monitor the progress of the project till its opening. His/her name will be announced soon, said an official. The new museum will showcase the magnificent contributions of Bihar to the evolution of Indian sub-continent. Hi-tech innovative displays, interactive models and audio-visuals would be added attraction of the museum.
Its concepts are: (a) Pataliputra to Patna today, (b) three stars –Buddha, Mahavira and Ashoka and Patna Museum of Art.
The Pataliputra to Patna Today section will showcase the evolution of Pataliputra from the age of Buddha, Mahavira, Ashok, Magadh, Nalanda, Gupta, Sasaram and formation of Bihar till IIT-Patna. The museum will have a lobby, orientation theatre, educational centre, multi-purpose rental hall, shop, café, library, thematic permanent gallery and temporary exhibition gallery.
