“Make agriculture more beneficial to farmers”
Former Director General of Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR) Mangla Rai today said Bihar would shine if agriculture was made more beneficial.
On the second day of the Global Bihar Summit 2012 on changing Bihar, Rai said there was a necessity to make agriculture more and more beneficial to help facilitate a state like Bihar shine.
He said the minimum support price for paddy and wheat in Bihar was lower than what farmers get in Haryana and Punjab but Bihari farmers have to sale foodgrains even lower than the MSP.
Farmers in the state were selling paddy at Rs 800 and Rs 900 per quintal despite record production this year while the MSP was at Rs 1080 per quintal.
Rai, who is also Advisor of agriculture matters to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, stressed the need for having a better procurement system for foodgrains and boosting production of dairy products, fishery development and vegetables production.
Bihar had taken a good lesson from the deterioration of fertility of land in Punjab because of green revolution. “The farmers in Bihar are now now using green fertilisers like Dhaincha (Sebeniya) which has set a new example in the country,” Rai said.
